Re-enchantments for a Troubled Time: Spiritual and Ethical Trends in Contemporary Television

The third in a series of events hosted by CSR during the 2017-2018 academic year on the theme of "Religion, Narrative, and Media" will present a conversation between Diane Winston (University of Southern California) and Krista Tippett (host, On Being).

When Max Weber wrote about disenchantment, he speculated that the "iron cage" of rationalism, efficiency and bureaucracy would deprive humans of awe and wonder. Today's "iron cage" is not just the prison of the capitalist machine, it's also a world of mass shootings, drone warfare, nuclear threats, climate change, sexism, police brutality, xenophobia, authoritarian oligarchs, hacking, bots and hate speech.

How do we find the strength to get up each morning?

Krista Tippett and Diane Winston will discuss the role of television in re-enchanting our world. Our conversation will touch on TV's response to today's issues; specifically its role in providing mystery, hope, and resilience in the face of  impossible challenges and soul-numbing tragedies.
