Tom Kasulis (OSU, Comparative Studies), "Zen Buddhism as Creativity"

December 3, 2014
All Day
010 Page Hall, 1810 College Rd, OSU campus

Professor Tom Kasulis of the Department of Comparative Studies will deliver the fourth lecture in the 2014-2015 "Religions of the World: Past and Present" lecture series. These lectures are intended for a general audience and are free and open to to the public. There will be a brief question-and-answer session and a reception following.

"Zen Buddhism is often associated with the Japanese arts, but the historical circumstances and philosophical ideals behind that association are seldom explored. In this lecture I will explain how Zen Buddhism's practices and teachings nurtured a form of creativity that can readily lend itself to artistic expression. In the final analysis, I will argue that what makes 'Zen art' is not the final product, but the way the artwork comes into being."
