Everybody Eats: Exploring Food, Flavors and Faith

Kickoff Program
Sunday, February 9
4:00 PM at Temple Israel, 5419 E. Broad Street.

Together with members from the Noor Center, Temple Israel, and Trinity  Episcopal  Church, we present a series of events to learn
about food and culture in Abrahamic faiths.

Part I - Sunday, February 9, 4:00 PM at Temple Israel5419 E. Broad Street. - We will kick off the series with a lecture, "Food, Family and Faith: From Soup to Nuts in the Abrahamic Traditions." by Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, professor, Department of Anthropology at the Ohio State University. Dr. Cohen's research focuses on three areas: migration, development  and  nutrition. Since the early 1990s he has studied the impact, structure and outcome of migration from indigenous communities in Oaxaca, Mexico to the US with support from the National Science  Foundation. He has also conducted comparative research on Mexican, Dominican and Turkish migration. His work on traditional foods, nutrition and migration was supported by the National Geographic Society. In addition to ongoing work in Oaxaca, he is currently studying the migration of Mexicans to Columbus.

Part II - March 9 - the series will continue with a guided discussion of food and faith in religious text. How are we similar? How do we differ? Explore these questions of food and faith with clergy and lay leaders  from our three organizations. Leaders will provide selected text readings and lead small study groups.

Part III - May 4 - serve the needy in your community. Everybody Eats will join together to cook and serve the needy in our community.

Part IV - June 8 - Celebrate Share food from our Family Kitchens Party. Gather at Temple Israel to share food together.

One ticket for just $5.00 covers entry to all four events.

We encourage you to also bring a canned good for donation to the Mid Ohio Food Bank. Best choices for canned goods are: Peanut  butter, tuna fish, canned fruits & vegetables, no glass containers please.

These events are supported by a generous grant from the Columbus Jewish Federation. Additional funds are provided by The Noor Center, Temple Israel and Trinity Episcopal Church.
