2014 Amy Family Interfaith Lectures
February 22 – 23, 2014
Church of the Master UMC, Westerville, Ohio

Guest Lecturer:  Dr. Geoff Barstow, Assistant Professor, Department of Religion and Philosophy, Otterbein University

Friday, February 22, 4pm:  Introduction to Buddhism (Roush Hall, Otterbein University)
This lecture will serve as a general introduction to the Buddhism.  It will emphasize core beliefs and ideals, but will also explore some of the key divisions within the Buddhist tradition.

Saturday, February 23, 10am:  Meditation and Other ‘Technologies of Enlightenment' (Church of the Master, 24 N. Grove Street, Westerville)
For many people, Buddhism is intimately connected to the practice of meditation.  This section will look at the place of meditation in traditional forms of Buddhism, as well as its relationship to other practices such as prayer, ritual and medicine.  We will also spend some time looking at some of the ways Buddhist meditation practices have been adapted in the west, particularly in medicine and the wellness movement.

Saturday February 23, 12noon: LUNCH (suggested donation: $5)

Saturday, February 23, 1:30pm  Buddhism in the Modern World (Church of the Master)
The final section will address the place of Buddhism in the modern world.  This will include discussion of some of the many challenges facing the tradition, including military persecution and the decline in traditional values.  We will also discuss, however, areas where Buddhists have been the persecutors, such as the recent anti-Muslim riots in Myanmar (Burma) and the civil war in Sri Lanka.

Participants may attend one, two, or all three lectures.
