Greek, Roman and Medieval Portraits
Laura Cherubini, a doctoral student working with Maurizio Bettini and Roberto Danese at the Centro Antropologia e Mondo Antico, Università degli Studi di Siena, is the Center's first Visiting Scholar. Laura is completing a dissertation on the ancient Greek, Roman and medieval portraits of the witch and related female creatures of the supernatural world. Last year, she spent several months at Ohio State studying with Professors Fritz Graf and Sarah Iles Johnston of the Department of Greek and Latin, and she returned this year as a guest of the Center to further pursue her studies. While at the Center, she completed an article on a particular type of ancient female demon called the strix, and its relationship to tales found throughout the world about women who marry bears or turn into bears.
Do you know a graduate student, or post-doctoral student, who will be visiting Ohio State to work on religion? By making him or her a "visiting scholar," the Center can provide a quiet place to work and facilitate their access to campus resources. Contact Sarah Iles Johnston at johnston.2@osu.edu
